I found someone in Rutherfordton, NC who had a petting zoo and had some minor damage from the flooding. She wanted to open it up to help the community and make it a place where those who have been displaced could come while they wait to get back in their homes. She started to be a supply hub and was collecting lots of relief items. She had plans to build platforms with tents for volunteers and those who lost their homes. She was also organizing a Christmas program for the community. It sounded like a great first stop for me and then after I was there a day or two see where God would lead me next. Well, yesterday I found out she is not above the board and is keeping all the money that has been coming in (which is quite a bit) for herself. And apparently, she has done this before. There is an article online from 2006 from the Herald-Tribune that explains how she was collecting money as a charity and enriching herself. Read it here.
It's quite disheartening, but I am glad to find out before I leave. As Jesus warns us, "the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." (John 10:10) May the abundant life be fully evident. Hallelujah!
I have a new starting place which is fully vetted, Cotton-patch Volunteer Relief Camp in Ellenboro, NC. I have contacted the manager, and they are expecting me. I am eager to see how God continues to guide me on this journey. Because I don't want to get ahead of God some of my details may be sparse until they actually happen. Then I can share more boldly about what God is doing. I am eager to seek God's face and He is definitely leading. Thank you for your prayers and for the generous gifts many of you have provided.
